He is estimated to be worth four and a half billion dollars, all of which he has built up in his own lifetime. Richard did not inherit a vast fortune that allowed him to grow to this extraordinary wealth. His first entrepreneurial venture was a high school magazine at the age of sixteen.  Then in the 1970s he started a mail-order record business which then evolved into a chain of record stores. Apparently the Virgin brand came about because one of his first employees thought they were so new to business that they were virgins.

The virgin brand expanded in the 1980s to the airline industry and has since taken on a host of other industries.  Richard Branson loves the challenge of business, and the result was to build a massive fortune.  His passion for life and his eagerness to take on incredible challenges, not only in his personal life, but also in his business life makes him a great role model.  His autobiography Losing My Virginity: How I Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way is not only a really entertaining read, but it also gives an insight to a man who has helped change the face of society and the approach to business.

To amass the fortune that Richard has, has come about from not only his own entrepreneurial flair, but the astute ability to attract and employ talented people to help build the Virgin brand.  The list of Branson’s achievements is vast and there is a wealth of information about his exploits as both a businessman and adventurer. Any student of success in business needs to consider Richard Branson as one of their role models.
